Shark Squad is an extension of the Gore Aquatic Centre’s Leaping Frogs Swim School.
It is about enjoying a team environment while working on reaching a high level of fitness, for sports or a healthier lifestyle, or getting into the competitive side of swimming.
There are five squad levels to ensure you can chose the programme and time commitment right for you.
If you are a competitive swimmer, you will still need to be affiliated to Hokonui Aquatics. Please contact Bev Catto, phone (03) 204 2281 or Sharon Shallard, phone 021 124 7486, or email hokonuiaquatics@gmail.com for more information.
Our present coach is Mariano Nani, who has swum competitively in Argentina. As an all-round sportsman, Mariano brings passion and enthusiasm to the role of Head Coach.
Shark Squad Rookie is where you will start your journey towards competitive swimming. You will learn about the clock and have the chance to compete at local swim meets and ribbon carnivals for experience. You will be expected to attend three sessions a week, working towards building endurance for the next stage. This squad is also an ideal vehicle if you want to maintain fitness for other sports or for leisure.
Shark Squad Advance targets those who are aiming to get involved in the more serious side of competitive swimming, primarily at a local level but also elsewhere. There will be up to six sessions a week and you will learn about setting pace and how to race. The chance to attend swimming information evenings and holiday camps will be available. Given this squad is a build up for age group competition you will be expected to be a leader on club nights.
Shark Squad Power is targeted at higher level competitive swimmers who want to compete locally and nationally, and are aiming for a national ranking. There will be up to 10 sessions a week. A strong commitment is required to get the most out of the programme and you will have to keep a log book. As members of the top echelon, there will be an expectation for you to be a leader within the club, assisting with younger swimmers and on club nights. There will be opportunities for further education through talks from sports professionals and swim camps.
Shark Fit Training is for those ready to get serious about being fit. Here you have the opportunity to set yourself fitness goals whether it’s for pleasure or sport. There will be three swimming sessions a week and we can offer support if you want to compete in triathlons. There may be the opportunity for open water lake swims and to further your athletic education through information evenings, training camps and presentations from other sports professionals.
Shark Fit Adult Training is for any adult who is training for fitness. This can range from programmes aimed at putting you on the path to a fitter and healthier lifestyle or helping you retain a high level of fitness for sports or pre-season training. The group also provides an ideal environment for anyone involved in Masters sports or triathlons. There may be an opportunity to open water swim and there will be a strong emphasis on camaraderie, where you will work with and encourage other squad members. We offer four swim time options.
