Community awards nominees of a high calibre

It is just over two weeks until the Gore District celebrates its achievers and those who have unselfishly given of their time, at the 2013 Gore District Community Awards.

This year’s awards have attracted 40 nominees across seven categories. The contribution to the environment has received the most support with 10 nominees while there are also good numbers in the emerging performing artist category, introduced last year.

High calibre of nominees

Awards convenor Susan Jones said the calibre of nominees this year was very high.

“This is such a unique event and it is great that we, as a community, can acknowledge the efforts and hard work of so many.”

However, it was disappointing to see numbers down in the two sports categories.

The junior sportsperson award has been very popular in the past and was to have been split into junior sportswoman and junior sportsman categories this year. However, there were only four nominees in total, so it was decided to retain the existing format, Mrs Jones said.

There were no nominees for the service to sport category, which was a pity, she said.

“There are a lot of people in the district who give up their time to coach or as administrators and deserve recognition.”

The awards’ gala dinner will be held at the Gore Town and Country Club Stadium, on Friday 1 November. Guest speaker is the voice of five Olympics, well known broadcaster Peter Williams.

Tickets are $40 per person and include a four course meal. They are available from the Destination Gore Information Centre.
