Cycle trail feasibility study

A feasibility study into the coordinated development of cycleway, walkway and equestrian trails in the Gore District is to be undertaken.

The Gore District trails initiative has gained strong support from local individuals and groups interested in cycling, walking and horse riding since a public meeting late last year. Two steering groups have been formed involving stakeholders and representatives from the Gore District Council and Venture Southland. One group will focus on cycleways and walkways while the other is to promote equestrian bridle paths.

A request for proposal to undertake the feasibility study has been prepared and was released this week to interested parties.

Gore District Communications Manager Sonia Gerken said the aim of the study is to identify projects for inclusion in future programmes, and provide a tactical overview.

"We need to identify what is happening at present, the opportunities for the future and how we can achieve the best use of resources."

The study will assist with funding, prioritising and decision-making at various levels, she said.

Gore District Mayor Tracy Hicks said it was great to see locals involved in this exciting initiative. Working collaboratively will ensure the benefits of any opportunities will be maximised.

"During last year's Long Term Plan people told the Council they wanted investment in cycleways and we listened."

The Council has set aside $10,000 to go towards the feasibility study.

There were already some interesting projects in the pipeline, such as the Gore to Mataura walkway and a Gore to Mandeville cycleway, Mr Hicks said.

Venture Southland chief executive Paul Casson said working alongside the Gore District Council on this project has been very satisfying.

"This positive initiative can only enhance the recreational experience for residents and visitors to the district," he said.
