Emergency pumping from Mataura River being carried out
The Gore District Council is carrying out emergency pumping from the Mataura River to supplement Gore’s water supply wells.
District Assets General Manager Paul Withers said pumping started last Sunday at Coopers Wells, while the Council has been pumping water to the Jacobstown Well since last month.
Mr Withers said residents may notice a slight change in the taste of the water as a result. This was cosmetic only and the water is safe to drink. Nevertheless, the Council is closely monitoring water quality, he said.
The hosing ban remains in place and Mr Withers commended the local businesses who have initiated water conservation measures.
These include the Mobil service station, which has turned off its car wash, McDonalds, which has stopped washing down its car park, car yards not washing their vehicles and Warehouse staff handheld watering plants in the garden centre.
The Council’s parks and reserves team is handheld watering the recently planted garden beds and all irrigation systems remain turned off.
