Final Nominations for Local Body Elections
A late influx of nominations for this year’s local body elections has resulted in seats on the Gore District Council and Mataura Licensing Trust being contested.
Gore District Electoral Officer Tony Shepherd said there were six nominations received this morning, prior to the noon deadline.
"As expected some people left it to the last minute to throw their hat into the ring."
For the Council, there will be an election for the district-wide ward, Waikaka ward and Gore ward.
In the district-wide ward the three seats will be contested by sitting councillors Cliff Bolger, Peter Grant and Nicola Davis, and Waikaka farmer John Gardyne. The Waikaka ward’s one seat will be contested by incumbent Bevin Watt and newcomer Diane Byars, while in the Gore ward there are eight candidates for the five seats.
They are Ralph Beale, Anne Gover, Doug Grant, Bret Highsted (all incumbents), Adam Hore, David Ogg, Graham Page and Laurel Turnbull.
The only seat on the Mataura Licensing Trust to be contested is the rural ward where long term incumbent Barbara MacKay is being challenged by newcomer Susan Jones.
The Mataura Community Board fell one short of the five candidates it requires and there will have to be a by-election.
