Hot temperatures push up water consumption
Last week’s record breaking temperatures made it a near record breaking day for water consumption in Gore.
Last Wednesday water usage in the town shot up by an extra 500,000 litres on the usual daily take of 4.5million litres. That is an 11 percent increase and saw the Hilbre Avenue reservoir fall below 50 percent capacity.
3 Waters manager Sarah Crooks said it showed just how finely balanced our water supply is.
“If we have two or three hot days and water consumption levels like that, we would have to seriously look at strict water restrictions.”
This week the 3 Waters team launched the ‘shower them with love not water’ campaign, aimed at making people aware of being water wise, and how even small changes in water usage can make a big difference.
“It’s the simple things that count – like using a handheld hose to water the garden instead of leaving the sprinkler on all night; or sweeping the driveway instead of hosing it.”
Over the next couple of months, there will be a series of advertisements with water saving tips and a photo competition inviting people to share how they are being water wise. There will be a weekly prize of two tickets to the Highlanders-Crusaders pre-season game in February.
