Mataura Pool opening delayed
A mechanical fault has forced a delay to the opening of the Mataura swimming pool, albeit by only three days.
The pool was to have opened next Saturday (26 September) for the new season. However, a broken auger means the opening will now be on Tuesday 29 September.
Gore District Council parks and recreation manager Ian Soper said the auger will take about five days to repair. This means the water will not be up to the required temperature in time for the weekend.
“The auger carts coal to the pool’s boiler so is critical to the whole water heating process.”
This is not the first time the auger has caused problems at the pool, Mr Soper said.
Aquatic services manager Kim Peterson said the Council has also had to review the Mataura pool’s opening hours, in the short term, due to a staff shortage in the aquatics team.
“Ensuring staff cover is a bit of challenge right now as we have a couple of senior positions vacant, as well as looking for lifeguards, and swim/fitness instructors.”
It has been decided to open the pool on the days that are traditionally the busiest, she said.
The pool will be open Sunday through to Thursday, and closed on Friday and Saturday.
These hours will be reviewed when staff numbers are back to normal, Ms Peterson said.
“We have been gearing up for a great start to the season for Mataura. It’s just really unfortunate the mechanical issue and staff shortage have taken the gloss off that slightly.”
Mataura’s popular aquarobics and Activ8 classes will still be held as usual.
During the school holidays aquarobics will be held each Tuesday and Thursday from 11.00am to 12 noon. Pool opening hours for the next two weeks will be Monday, Wednesday and Sunday 1.00pm to 5.00pm; Tuesday and Thursday 11.00am to 5.00pm.
