New cycling and walking trail gets the go-ahead
The Hokonui Trails Trust has been given the go ahead to develop a cycling and walking trail, linking Dolamore Park, Domain Road and Pope Road.
Gore District Council hearing commissioner David Pullar has granted the trust consent for the trail, subject to eight conditions. Among the conditions is upgrading the parking area in Pope Road to ensure space for 10 cars.
Gore district consultant planner Keith Hovell said the application attracted three submissions. All were in favour of the proposal.
The trust and submitters have three weeks in which to appeal any conditions. However, Mr Hovell said he did not expect the applicant to appeal as they have already indicated they generally accept the content of conditions.
The trail will be about 7km long and available to the public for walking and cycling. It will meet the New Zealand Cycle Trail guidelines Grade 2-3 trail standards, which means it is suitable for beginner to intermediate cyclists.
Part of the trail is proposed to follow an existing disused water race. The trail will also run parallel to the existing mountain bike track near Pope Road. Construction is expected to take three months.
