New walkway to be officially opened
A new walkway in Mataura is proving popular even before it is officially opened.
The 800m gravel walkway runs beside the Waimumu Stream and takes walkers from the southern end of Asquith Street to State Highway One, coming out near the bridge at Mataura’s southern boundary.
The Mataura Community Board has championed the project since it was first mooted three years ago.
Gore District parks and recreation manager Ian Soper said the project cost about $18,000. There was funding assistance from the New Zealand Walking Access Commission and Mataura Licensing Trust.
The walkway is on the flood bank and Mr Soper acknowledged the support of Environment Southland.
There is an open invitation to members of the public to the official opening, to be held at 2.15pm this Friday at the state highway end.
