Pyramid Bridge collapse

Pryamid Bridge collapse #3

Friday 2 February 2018 @ 7.15pm

The 50m section of the Pyramid Bridge, which broke off late this morning, has been located 50 to 60m downstream of the bridge. It appears securely wedged and the Council believes it poses no threat to structures downstream.

The section was located using a helicopter.

The Pyramid Bridge, which is on the Riversdale Pyramid Rd, collapsed after a build-up of debris caused by the high water flow following yesterday’s rainfall.

Barriers have been erected at the bridge and a detour is in place. The detour is via Pyramid-Waiparu Road, Waipounamu Bridge Rd and the Riversdale-Waikaia Road.

The main pipe for the Otama rural water supply scheme, which was attached to the bridge, has been severed. There are 253 connections to the scheme for stock and household water.

The initial estimate is that it will take a week to restore the water supply. This, coupled with the fact that at 5.00pm today all the scheme’s reservoirs were empty, has resulted in the Council and Otama water supply committee advising farmers to initiate water conservation measures for domestic and stock supply immediately.

The Council will have a water tanker stationed at the Otama hall from 11.00 tomorrow morning to supply drinking water.

The Council will ensure there is water for the two schools on the scheme – Otama and Knapdale schools.

The Council is asking scheme users to check on their neighbours as it appreciates this is a trying and stressful time.

URGENT NOTICE FOR OTAMA RURAL WATER SCHEME USERS

At 1.00pm today the Pyramid Bridge collapsed and a 50m section was washed away, taking with it the main pipeline for the Otama water scheme.

The Council and Otama scheme committee had an emergency meeting this evening to discuss options for restoring the supply.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:

It will be at least seven days before the water supply will be restored. This, coupled with the fact that at 5.00pm today all the scheme’s reservoirs were empty, mean it is critical for farmers to initiative water conservation measures for domestic and stock supply immediately.

There will be a water tanker stationed at the Otama hall from 11.00am tomorrow (Saturday) to provide drinking water for scheme users.

The Council will ensure there is water for the two schools on the scheme – Otama and Knapdale – when they open on Monday.

Please check on your neighbour – there are 253 connections to the scheme and everyone is affected.

There is still a boil water notice in place for the scheme.

If you require water to be trucked in please contact one of the following registered drinking water carriers:

  • Cleanways 2003 Ltd Rapid Water - 0274328873

Pryamid Bridge collapse #2

Friday 2 February 2018 @ 2.10pm

The Gore District Council roading and 3 Waters teams are on site at the Pyramid Bridge after a 50m section broke away late this morning. The Pyramid Bridge spans the Mataura River, 6km east of Riversdale, linking the Riversdale-Pyramid Road and Otama Road.

We are focusing our attention at this point on:

The safety of motorists and people in the area

Water supply for residents and livestock on the Otama rural water supply scheme.

Staff have been sent out and we are looking at getting a helicopter in to find out where the 50m section that has broken away is. There are fears it may be travelling downstream although given its weight, it may have sunk to the river bed.

We are advising people to stay away from any structures downstream of the bridge in case the debris is heading downstream.

The main pipe for the Otama rural water supply scheme, which was attached to the bridge, has severed. There are 253 connections to the scheme for stock and household water. We are looking at bringing in a tanker to provide clean drinking water and options to restore supply.

We asked people to stay away from the bridge site. There are reports of a lot of bystanders and we need our staff to focus on securing the site.
