Time called on playground
The Gore District Council will start removing equipment from the Irk Street playground next week, vacating the land it’s leased for the last 21 years.
The playground officially closes on Sunday (16 July) with the property owner earmarking the site for redevelopment.
The playground was established in 1996 after the land was offered to the Council by the then owner, the Gore Methodist Church trustees. Construction of the play equipment was a collaboration between the Gore Rotary Club and the Council.
Parks and recreation manager Ian Soper said the availability of the land had been a good opportunity, albeit a short term one, to provide a play area.
“The land lease was only until 2011 so we’ve been fortunate to get an extra six years’ use out of the playground.”
While much of the play equipment was out-dated, whatever was salvageable will be moved to other playgrounds or repurposed, he said.
