Gore Ward By-Election
A by-election was required to fill a vacancy for a councillor for the Gore District Council’s Gore Ward. The vacancy arose following the resignation of long-term councillor Bret Highsted.

Sales manager Andy Fraser leads the race for our Gore ward by-election.
Six candidates contested the Gore ward vacancy, which came after long standing councillor Bret Highsted resigned.
Mr Fraser is a former Southland police officer and currently works at Southland Farm Machinery.
With approximately 97% of votes counted, the progress result is:

How can I cast a special vote?
Special voting facilities for this by-election will be available at our main office, 29 Bowler Avenue, Gore, during normal office hours between Wednesday 21 June and 12 noon on Thursday 13 July 2023.
What is the by-election voting process?
This by-election will be conducted by postal voting using the First Past the Post (FPP) electoral system.
Candidate names will be listed in random order on the voting papers. The voting papers will be mailed out to electors on Wednesday 21 June 2023 and voting will close at 12 noon on Thursday 13 July 2023.
Who can vote in this by-election?
As this by-election is for a seat in our Gore Ward, ratepayers who own property in this ward or residents can vote.

What is the cost for this by-election?
If more than one person stands, and an election is required, the cost is $34,000.
If only one person puts their name forward, the cost reduces significantly to $3,500.
