On the Fly Mataura River Festival returns
The On the Fly Mataura River Festival returns for its fourth year on Sunday 25 February, celebrating Gore’s world-famous river with a day full of fly-fishing, delicious food, free children’s activities, and live entertainment.
For the first time, the event has been granted a special licence for the sale of alcohol.
Gore District Council Senior Events Coordinator Jessica Swan said during planning for the event, her team brainstormed what could be a new element that still captures the celebration of our river and pairs nicely with fly fishing.
“Bringing the event back to River Terrace means we have lots of space to play with and big, beautiful trees providing shade along the bank.
“This led us to thinking, wouldn’t it be such a lovely spot to have a cold beverage on a nice, sunny day.”
Double Cone Brewery and the Hokonui Moonshine Trust will be at the event selling a variety of craft beer, moonshine cocktails and wine.
Miss Swan said she was thrilled to have their support.
“When we approached them with the idea, they were immediately keen to get on board. Both are so passionate about their product and have been incredibly enthusiastic about the themes of the event.”
There will be fly-fishing demonstrations throughout the day by Chris Dore and Mike Weddell, suitable for beginners through to advanced anglers. A group licence for the day means anyone can try their hand at the sport, regardless of whether they have a licence or not.
Those keen to participate in a friendly casting competition could walk away with prizes.
“Category Three Fly Company, B&B Sports and Kiwi Fly Fishing have been very generous, providing us with a variety of prizes to giveaway throughout the day.
“More than that though, people get to learn about the sport and grow their love of fly fishing,” Miss Swan said.
Kids will love the free face painting and mini jeeps, while live music by Steven Hamlin and Kayla Wilcox will keep the atmosphere buzzing. There will be plenty of food trucks to fill hungry tummies.
Canine friends are welcome to attend the festivities too.
Catch the On the Fly Mataura River Festival Sunday 25 February, from 11:00am to 3:30pm along River Terrace. Free entry and all are welcome.
